As time goes by, a group of students are applying their overseas universities and achieve their dreams. Calm down and work hard, maybe that's the same feeling of excellent art students. When they upload their portfolios to slideroom, that's a honour and perturbed moment. Today we ARTEMODA are lucky to have a interview with Marjorie in School of Visual Arts in New York. Let's start!!
Hi,can you introduce yourself please? What major do you study now?
Hi, I’m Marjorie. My major is Graphic Design.
Why do you want to study Graphic Design? Do you have something that stimulate you to study it?
I designed several posters when I was in Grade 10, and then I was interested in Graphic Design gradually. I think compare to drawing, I prefer to design.
Can you tell us anything about your high school? What do you think is the most helpful thing for your art studying in your high school?
My high school is Ulink College of Suzhou Industrial Park. I think I am very lucky that I get through practice such as making posters and blackbord to contact with design. It made me became more intersted in design. Also, I met many excellent students who want to study design when I was in Grade 11, they let me know many new things about design.
What did you feel when you just start life of studying abroad?
I was getting familiar with surrounding. I was nervous about strangers at first. I thought I got homesickness but actually I didn’t. Maybe because of the delicious food(lol), but the main concern is so many things are so expensive(my heart is bleeding...).
in art galleries
Can you introduce your current academic life in your new school? Is that stressful?
M: My school is School of Visual Art in New York, in Manhattan, the location is very good and convenient. We actually do not have a campus in the school and each building is located in every corner of Manhattan. Every day I spent half an hour walking to school, it can be called a fitness haha! I have lessons from Monday to Thursday, each are professional major lessons, drawing lessons and humanities lessons. I feel quite stressful as a freshman and if we measure the study stress, it’s like every week we need to have 27 hours lessons which is 12 hours more than a comprehensive university. The shortest class is 3 hours and the longest is 6 hours. Between each classes we will have 20 minutes for break(basically its used for hurry to another classroom), but actually I heard our break time this year has prolonged 10 minutes. Well, the most unbearable is I have to have lunch at 3 pm every day. However, every week is fulfilling and I can learn new things every single day which is deserve for my tuition haha!! And turns out going to an university is for you to work hard, study more, I am really enjoy doing this.
Could you tell us what do we need if we want to apply for a Design major briefly?
Good grades(A-Level,TOEFL/IELTS),a fully modified essay, a well-done portfolio and a heart which ready to being torture(lol)
M:Portfolio call be called the most important part of the application of an art student, how did you prepare your portfolio？
I Started to make my portfolio at the end of AS, and totally it was 4 months, it was quite hurry. For portfolio, you will need 4-5 projects altogether, so i was freak out, making the portfolio in a huge hurry.Thinking, research, experiment, artist study at the beginning, forming a shape, modifying, composing at the last. At that time, i have schoolwork, i need to have lessons during the weekdays and having exams. For admission, i need to write big essay, modification and filling in various forms and working hard on my TOEFL exam. Usually i make my portfolio during the self study time in school and the time i spent at home. On every Saturday, i got on a train to shanghai in the early morning to have lessons of portfolio and came back on Sunday night(it was so awkward, i was always in a hurry for catching a train!)At the end of December, i started to compose type of portfolio andupload them to the slideroom, and eventually, in January, all my portfolio had done!
Is there any impressive memory you have when you making your portfolio?
Before in November, i went to the info and admission session of School of Art Institute of Chicago, and there was “portfolio review”, basically it was the admission officer read your work and give you some comments, something like this. Everyone got an number in sequence to see the officer. I just finished my TOEFL exam in that morning, i went there in a hurry and get the number. Then, the review started, i remember my number was 106, which is the last one. Most students there got fantastic compliments by the officer of their artwork, but at that time my portfolio is still in process, and i haven’t composed the type. I can feel how awkward the officer feel after seeing my portfolio, and he said if i really want to enter SAIC, i need to work much harder, time is limited. I was so hurt and upset at that moment(lol). I thought it is impossible for me to enter this school, is that all my effort is useless and i nearly cried(so silly haha). But actually i quite like SAIC and i nearly submit the down payment at that day, for the students who study fine art and those who really want to learn art techniques, SAIC is a good choice.
Have you ever thought about staying in the US?
My parents want me to, but i feel it is quite hard. Especially nowadays, the work visa is becoming harder to apply successfully, i think the only chance to stay here is to make myself become better in the field i am doing so i can be needed. But if l could have an opportunity to stay there, i would like to stay.(But yummy food is necessary!
What job do you want to do in the future?
I haven’t decided, but i quite want to join an animation game company.
What do your family think of your major in your current university?
Actually they think the major is easy for me to get a job, so they are not that worry about me:)
Which designer or design style do you like best？
well, can't say as my favourire whereas i prefer the fresh style which combined with hand-designed elements, just like those which make people feel comfortable[kinds of superficial]. To me, i really enjoy the interaction design by a designer called Fyn Ng.
By Fyn Ng
Which book do you like best?
《Together Always》by Edwina Wyatt. It is a painting book. My heart was caught by the painting style of this book. This style is the style which I always chase. Although the words in it are very few, but they hit my heart directly. It could say that they solved a big problem in my mind. They have a big impact to me.

Have you ever met something interesting in the USA?

Marjorie in NYC
Which food will you recommend in New York if let you recommend?
churos-The food like the fry bread. There is some white creams poured on it. And this food was inserted into the ice cream. So delicious!!! I phoned all my friends about this tasty bread at that moment!!
Which job you wanna do if you won’t be a graphic designer?
To be honest, I really wanna be a superstar for a day(lol). Because I always be the common fan of different superstars, so l really wanna experience the busy life of theirs.
For the high school art and fashion, do you have any thoughts or suggestions?
Actually I respect the classmates who studies fashion design. They have their own vision to life and personal style in the youth. I can’t do that, really. I think they’re very cool.
Do you have anything else sharing with your juniors?
The last thing which I wanna mention is that never choose Art for the relaxation. I have seen many of my classmates in the college. In the beginning, they chose Art because its relaxation. Instead the truth is opposite. Teachers will torture you if you don’t do the homework. Some people give up in the half way. I really feel pity for them. They spent hounded of thousands to quit. I can’t accept it. Art need more time and attention on it. Then you can get a satisfied outcome. You have much time figure out what you really like in high school. It’s very important to choose the thing which you really wanna do. What’s more, you shouldn’t have any mentality of comparison and peacock. The most important thing is to calm down, then study.
